Oleksandr Roitburd


Born in 1961 in Odesa. He graduated from the painting and graphic department of the Ushinskyi Odesa Institute. In 1993 in Odesa he founded the New Arts Association, which gave birth to a new art phenomenon — the Odesa Renaissance. He served as the director of the Guelman Gallery in Kyiv. During the years 1997–1999 he was Chairman of the Board of the Soros-Odesa Contemporary Art Centre. Roitburd had a solo exhibition at the opening of the Guelman Gallery in Moscow. He served as curator of several key art projects in Ukraine in the 1990s, including New Figurations (1991), Free Zone (1994), and Academy of Cold (1998). In 2001–2002 he lived in New York. At the Plateau of Humankind, 49th Venice Biennale, the artist showed his video installation Psychedelic Intervention of the Potemkin Battleship into Tautological Hallucinosis by Sergei Eisenstein.
