KYIV ART WEEK PRESENTS A PROJECT DEDICATED TO UZUPIS ART REPUBLIC

14 May 2018

On May 23-27 under the aegis of Kyiv Art Week Uzupis: Responsibility for Freedom project will take place; it is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Lithuanian statehood restored. The participants include Lithuanian and Ukrainian contemporary artists, with Kostyantyn Doroshenko as curator.

Uzupis: Responsibility for Freedom

Uzupis is a unique formation on the territory of Vilnius, a real artistic state. Starting from the 1990s, an abandoned city neighborhood has hosted various art events; the spot became a favorite among artists, directors, musicians, actors, and writers. In 1997, a group of artists announced the creation of a republic, a state with its president, government, and constitution the text of which has become known all over the world. Uzupis is a territory of freedom with no clear rules or laws. However, the Constitution of this state stipulates that each one is responsible for his/her freedom as there is no freedom without responsibility and vice versa. “Responsibility is both a consequence of freedom and its pre-condition,” the project organizers say. “That is why those who avoid responsibility find themselves in a dictatorship. Artists are responsible for their talents, visions, and creative efforts; this responsibility is probably the hardest one.”

On May 24 the project will present a meeting with one of Uzupis founders, its minister for foreign affairs and journalist Tomas Čepaitis.
