New Perspective: 8 contemporary artists from Ukraine

01 December 2015

The founders of the “Mystetska Zbirka” art gallery Maksym and Julia Voloshyn have chosen eight contemporary Ukrainian artists they deem to be the most promising, and with help from the Ukrainian Institute of America, had brought their works to New York. The exhibition will be taking place from the 1st to the 20th of December.

The exhibition includes Oleh Tistol, Mykola Matsenko, Roman Minin, Stepan Ryabchenko and also Myhailo Deyak, Anna Valieva, Artem Volokitin and Tetyana Malynovska. The criteria for the choice of participants were quite clear: the author must be describing the Ukrainian society, and they must be doing it in a unique manner.

Mykola Matsenko Neo-folk

“Mykola Matsenko represents the so-called ‘neo-folk’. Oleh Tistol tells about a ‘paradise lost’ of the post-Soviet Crimea. Stepan Ryabchenko creates absolutely unseen multimedia images. Roman Minin recreates the archetype of the miner, as a new hero of our time. This is our history, our culture, encoded in the paintings”, - details Maksym Voloshyn.
