Pavlo Makov is one of the most famous contemporary graphic artists in Ukraine, an expert in etching. The artist’s works are very detailed; all fragments are done with high precision and thought out to the minutest detail. The artist often creates his etchings as parts of wide-scale projects, so any sheet with graphics is a page from a big book with the history of the whole world, real or imaginary, encoded in it. Among the most famous series by Pavlo Makov are UtopiA and Gardens; in the recent years, the graphic artist has been working on a project investigating the connection between a landscape and a text. The works created in 2017 were showcased at 2017 Plans exhibition in Dukat gallery.

Now the artist is a member of Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (UK); his works are presented in Victoria and Albert Museum (London) and The Met (New York), in numerous private collections in Ukraine and abroad. Zenko Foundation also has some of his works in its collection.

Other Shevchenko Award winners this year include Emma Andiyevska (literature), Sergiy Plokhyi (journalism), Victoria Polyova (music), Volodymyr Tykhyi, Yaroslav Pilunsky, Sergiy Stetsenko, and Yuriy Gruzinov (cinema).

The selection committee included 24 representatives of different cultural fields; in the art section, the winners were determined by artists Anatoliy Kryvopal and Sergiy Savchenko, art scholar Maria Zadorozhna, curator and gallerist Tatyana Tumasyan.
