PERMANENT REVOLUTION: works by Maria Kulikovska

13 April 2018

PERMANENT REVOLUTION, an exhibition of Ukrainian contemporary art, opens in Ludwig Museum in Budapest. This is the first wide-scale museum presentation of Ukrainian contemporary art to the European audience.

Curator Alisa Lozhkina about works HAPPY BIRTHDAY (Documentation of performance, 2015) and CARPE DIEM (Sculptures, 2017) by Maria Kulikovska:

Even before Maidan events, Maria began a series of works, which are in fact casts of her body. In particular, the works from this series were exhibited in the only contemporary art institution in Donetsk, Isolyatsiya art center. During the 2014 conflict in Donetsk, separatists captured the territory of the factory where the art center was located and shot at the exhibition of Kulykovska’s sculptures Homo Bulla.

To remember this event, in 2015 Maria conducted a performance entitled Happy Birthday in Saatchi Gallery London. The naked artist was breaking soap casts of her body with a hammer as an answer to separatists who had destroyed her works.
