Yevgen Nikiforov On Republic's Monuments

PERMANENT REVOLUTION, an exhibition of Ukrainian contemporary art, opens in Ludwig Museum in Budapest. This is the first wide-scale museum presentation of Ukrainian contemporary art to the European audience.

About works ON REPUBLIC’S MONUMENTS (Color photography, 2014-2018) by Yevgen Nikiforov:

During the last four years, the photographer worked on creating a multi-layer visual archive of Soviet cultural heritage in public spaces of contemporary Ukraine, documenting the current state of Soviet-time objects (or their remnants), which used to dominate but now have become almost invisible.

He captured not only “Lenin fall” but also the fate of other artistic and decorative elements the meaning of which is rather ambiguous today. The shots selected for the exhibition display the whole diversity and inventiveness of “decommunization” approaches. Numerous granite leaders, plaster pioneers, iron soldiers, and stone workers are now redone, vandalized, shyly hidden and even combined with new elements belonging to “contemporary patriotic symbols” range.

Nikiforov’s project depicts the false bottom of the official memory policy and points to the lack of civilized mechanisms to work with the past.
