In his creative practice, Nikolay Matsenko ironically explores the problem of national and personal identities in contemporary globalized work. Rethinking folklore, the artist interprets the attributes of national existence, brings into the foreground deep archetype layers of Ukrainian common mind and creates original contemporary national symbols. In his meditative cycle Neofolk folklore motives acquire a new shape consistent with modernity, similar to contemporary “visual kolomyika songs” where sophisticated and harmonious color variations are built around a single structural module.
