Each work by Aleksandr Zhivotkov is a philosophical statement. The artist prefers working in minimalist color range limiting himself mostly to gray, brown and black. But as Zhivotkov has mastered numerous hues of these several colors perfectly, he manages to remain surprisingly picturesque in his works. They stand out thanks to their voluminous, almost bas-relief texture. The scarceness in the color palette reminds of asceticism in icon painting, which only emphasizes the sacral symbols Zhivotkov’s works are full of. Still, even in using the language of religious symbols the artist does not resort to preaching; when speaking about spirituality, he remains in the philosophical plane.
